Teaching

Pre-school group – Wednesday 16: 00-17: 30

The pre-school group is especially for children from 2½ to 4 years, and aims to increase the Dutch vocabulary in a playful way and thereby give toddlers the confidence to speak Dutch. The group meets once a week for 1.5 hours on the same day as the other groups.

For children who grow up abroad, as in our case in Australia, acquiring Dutch language skills is an extra challenge. Although parents often do their best to learn the Dutch language, it is difficult to do this with so many English-speaking influences. Friends speak English, television programs are in English, parents speak at least outside the door a lot of English and daycare and playgroups generally have English as the language of instruction. In addition, many children grow up in a bilingual family, where one of the parents speaks (mainly) English. Children are the most sensitive to learning a language until their fourth year of life, we have to use them!

Since it has been proven that it is good for children to come into contact with both languages from an early age, we started with a toddler group for children aged 2.5 – 4 years. This toddler group is intended to prepare the children for Dutch education that can be attended from 4 years onwards. The focus within this group is on language development, although attention will naturally also be paid to things like social skills and creativity, for example (after all, you work in a group with children). Language development will be supported in different ways:

  • read from books
  • singing Dutch songs
  • playing games that focus on language
  • playing with everyday materials, where the teacher supports in naming things in Dutch
  • role play
  • viewing and discussing Dutch-language television programs
  • creative expressions that have a link with language (for example making a drawing in which the teacher gives a clear assignment or where the child expresses in Dutch what can be seen)

The rate for participation in the toddler group is $ 250 per term. This amounts to $ 25 per lesson of one and a half hours: Dutch education for the price of an average babysitter! Pupils from the toddler group can move on to the regular foundation group from the term that they become 4 (or in consultation with a term thereafter).

Junior Group – Wednesday 3.30pm – 6.00pm

In our Junior group (years 1 and 2) we have children aged 4 till about 6 years.  Children in this group follow the official Dutch language curriculum for year 1 and 2 Dutch primary school.  We work on maintaining and extending the children’s vocabulary in a thematical and playful way.

The educational method that we use is ‘Puk en Ko’, combined with any other material that suits the topical theme. We stimulate the children’s language development by working on language in a number of ways, suited as much as possible to the child’s individual needs. We tell stories, sing songs and have show and tell moments. We also make time for creative activities and active moments.

The (language) development of young children takes places in stages, at different moments and different speed for every individual child. Repetition is characteristic for children at this age. We ask of parents to talk with their child at home about things that they have done in class. Parents receive a weekly report of the lesson, containing the subjects and activities that were done in class, so they can build on that.

This group is best suited for children with a reasonable understanding of the Dutch language. Children can start at the beginning of the term in which they turn 4 (the age at which children start primary school in the Netherlands). The fees are 362.50 per term (36.25 per 2.5 hour lesson). We don’t charge for participation in the NTC days. For less than 15 dollar per hour your child will receive high quality Dutch language education. In case the full year fee is payed at once, a discount of $100 will be applied.

Middle group – Wednesday 3.30pm – 6.00pm

In the Middle group (years 3 and 4) we have children aged 6 till 9. The subjects handled in this group are (extension of) vocabulary, reading, spelling and reading comprehension. We use the official Dutch language education methods.

In the Netherlands children start learning to read in year 3. In Australia we are fortunate to have children that have started reading (in English) earlier than that. Despite this base that is already there, children still need to learn new Dutch letter combinations and pronunciation. A lot of time and effort needs to be put in reading, at school as well as at home.

Reading comprehension starts playing a more significant role in year 4. We use the method ‘Nieuwsbegrip’, with lessons based on topical Dutch news themes. This way our students develop their reading and listening comprehension, as well as keep up with things happening in the Netherlands.

Senior group – Wednesday 3.30pm – 6.00pm

The Senior group (years 5 – 8) has children from the age of 9 till about 12. The students are split up in small groups by age as well as level of skill.

In this group the children take significant steps in mastering the Dutch language. They work on their spelling, grammar, but also still on their vocabulary, speaking skills and reading comprehension.

For language conventions and spelling, we use a modern teaching method called Staal, which also makes use of online resources. This appeals to students and helps to make learning fun!

In support of reading comprehension, we use the method ‘Nieuwsbegrip’, with lessons based on topical Dutch news themes. This way our students develop their reading and listening comprehension, as well as keep up with things happening in the Netherlands.
